My Hair | Before Pics: 6 Months Challenge

I am challenging myself to do 6 months of protective styling. My ultimate goal for the end of 2011 is waist length, but by giving myself short term challenges, it helps me to make my goals more realistic.

So to keep myself accountable – Here are my pictures of my hair 3 weeks into this goal. I realized I can use this striped shirt to measure the growth. Beats creating a t-shirt with lines on it!

So my official BEFORE PICTURES JAN 2011:

Front of my hair is: Past armpit length APL
Sides of my hair are: Just about bra-strap length
Back of my hair: Just hit Mid Back length

My realistic goal is to have the back of my hair all at mid-back length and the front at bra-strap length!

I had to stretch my hair in sections, I had just taken it out of my protective box braids and it was HUGE!

I must say I am shocked at my hair so far, although I know I could have taken better care of it this past year this is the longest my hair has EVER been!

  1. Wow, your hair is pretty long and it looks natural
I just had a haircut, so my hair is like 5 inches long, im on a journey to natural hair rid of chemicals and hot irons!!!!!!Its really painful tho, cos my hair is thick and full.
Do you have any ideas or advice?

Congrats on starting a new life with your hair. You wont regret it. I know getting used to no relaxers and irons can be difficult at first but you can adjust. One of the best tips, that I can offer you would be to remain consistent. Wash your hair on a normal basis and remember to moisturize. Those two things were key when I just started. I will be posting great tips throughout the blog. And if you have any specific questions don't be afraid to ask.

  3. This reminds me I got to take my before and after pictures. Right now I have been wearing full-weaves as a protective style to prevent the day to day hair maintenance. However, I have been taking care of my hair underneath, by moisturizing my scalp. What are your thoughts on putting your hair in weaves as a "protective style?"

  4. @Maya

Weaves are a godsend protective style, especially when you want to change up your look. I love the fact that you can have a new look, while your hair is just growing beneath! Just be sure to nourish YOUR hair with moisture. I will do a post on weave maintenance asap! I know its easy to neglect your hair while in weaves and extensions, but your hair will suffer and you will experience a lot of breakage! Look out for the post!

  5. Soooooo looking forward to the post on how to maintain your hair when its weaved/braided up!

I cant reconcille moisturing( wetting) my hair when I have a weave on, esp a full head weave.
